Telkom zeroes educational websites due to coronavirus

Telkom has confirmed that it will zero-rate educational websites as well as those that inform the public about the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Zero-rated educational websites primarily include the websites of educational institutions at universities and colleges.

Telkom is doing this to help these educational institutions continue their learning and teaching processes, even if physical classes have to be canceled.

Telkom has also zero-rated official coronavirus news sites on its network – including The National Institute of Communicable Diseases and South African government websites.

“We believe the pandemic can be overcome if we work together and ensure that South Africans have access to accurate information about the virus,” Telkom spokesman Mooketsi Mocumi said.

Wits partners with Vodacom and MTN

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) is in talks with mobile operators – including Telkom, Vodacom and MTN – to forge partnerships regarding student data consumption amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib said he spoke personally with Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko, while his team spoke to Vodacom, MTN and others.

This is part of the university’s plans to switch to online teaching and learning when needed.

Habib said the university is already in the last week of classes before the semester break – giving her more time to decide what steps she will take.

“We still have at least two to three weeks. We need to determine what the scale of this pandemic will be before determining the appropriate actions for the country as a whole, ”Habib said.
